journal twenty-four.

she grew up too fast

because society told her

her shoulders were alluring

that the legs she used

to race the other kids in gym class

we’re a distraction

that the lips she used

to sing hot cross buns during music

were so sexy

she grew up too fast

because society told him

boys will be boys

when did girls will be girls

become synonymous with slut?

tell me.

while he played class clown,

she focused on how to dress in the morning

not for herself, but for everyone else

she grew up too fast

because she was convinced she asked for it

when his hands crept into her pants

she grew up too fast

because she thought she would be a tease

for saying no

so instead, she said,

maybe, not right now.

there are people outside the door.

we can pick this up later.

and then closed her eyes

she grew up too fast

because we shamed her innocence

instead of building her confidence

because we made her body a game

she had to learn how to survive

she grew up too fast

and somehow, we’re still surprised?

– every girl i know has a story and isn’t that an awful truth

Raw and unadulterated — this is how I typically feel things. And when I feel these things I think I feel, I write. My little pieces of comprehension have taken the form of words jumbled together on your screen. A masterpiece? Probably not, but welcome to glimpses of this incredible life I get to experience. I do hope you’ll stick around.
